Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as motor neuron disease, is a fatal, irreversible progressive central neurodegenerative disorder. The global standardized incidence rate of ALS stands at approximately 1.68 per 100,000 person-years, with onset predominantly occurring between 60 and 79 years of age and a male-to-female ratio of around 1.35:1. China presents distinct epidemiological characteristics for ALS: affected patients develop symptoms at a relatively younger average age of 53.2 years, and the growth rate of cases ranks among the highest worldwide. It is projected that the prevalence will rise by 42.7% between 2024 and 2040, with roughly 22,000 new cases emerging, imposing a substantial growing burden on public healthcare systems.
The disease selectively damages motor neurons driven by multiple contributing factors including genetic mutations, neuroinflammation and abnormal protein aggregation. Patients suffer progressive deterioration of motor functions while retaining intact sensation, cognition and consciousness, subjecting them to severe physical and psychological distress.
